Discussion on GMOs
If you are not aware about what GMOs are, a product that contains "GMOs" is a product that is made of genetically modified produce such as corn. The use of GMOs in our food supply has not been studied for longitudinal effects on consumers. Due to this reason and other concerns, GMOs have been banned by the European Union, Australia, Japan, the U.K. and other places. A large cause for alarm in America is the fact that GMO products are not clearly labeled "containing GMOs" so as a result, many Americans remain unaware of the possible risks of consuming GMO products.
Another bad thing about GMOs is that they limit the variety of the specific kind of plant. In order for a species to survive, they must be able to adapt and therefore there must be genetic variations and reproduction to ensure the survival of the species. GMO products are very specific in their DNA meaning that should the crop experience a hardship, it may not be able to survive putting farmers and communities that largely depend on these products largely at risk. Genetic mutations in DNA is not such a foreign concept to many of us, these mutations can result in many health problems such as development of cancer. Once a mutation occurs, there is no turning back and if we limit our food production to GMO specific varieties and an unexpected mutation occurs, serious consequences should take place.
There have not been any studies to suggest that GMO products are safe for consumption. Most GMO crops also require many different fertilizers, and harmful pesticides that can show up in the food you eat and feed to your family without you even knowing.
Please keep in mind that the purpose of this article is to inform you about GMOs, but not turn you against them. The intentions behind GMO products are not that of disaster, but rather to produce a product cheaper, easier, quicker, and better looking. However, pay attention to the foods that you eat and feed your family and remember that growing your own food and eating locally grown produce is the best choice for healthy living.
